When a UPVC window or door develops a significant fault, homeowners are often told by replacement companies that the only solution is a full replacement. In the vast majority of cases, this isn't true. Here's how to think through the repair vs. replacement decision honestly.
The UPVC Frame Rarely Fails
The UPVC frame itself — the white plastic structure around the glass — is the most durable part of the system and typically lasts 25 to 35 years before showing significant deterioration. What fails first is almost always the hardware: hinges, mechanisms, locks, handles, and sealed glass units. These can all be replaced independently, often at a fraction of the cost of a full window or door replacement.
When Repair Is Almost Always the Answer
If the fault is a stiff handle, a dropped door, a broken mechanism, a misted sealed unit, failed seals, or a jammed lock, repair is almost certainly the right choice. These are all standard repairs that can be completed in under two hours at a cost significantly below full replacement. There's no benefit to replacing a structurally sound frame.
When Replacement Becomes Worth Considering
Replacement makes sense when: the frame itself is cracked, delaminating, or significantly discoloured beyond cosmetic cleaning; the door or window has been badly damaged in a break-in or accident; the glazing specification is very outdated (pre-2000 installations may have double glazing well below modern A-rated standards); or multiple components have failed simultaneously and the system is showing general end-of-life deterioration.
Get an Honest Assessment
The key is to get an assessment from someone who doesn't make more money from recommending replacement. A UPVC repair specialist, by definition, earns their living from repairs and will give you an honest view of whether your windows or doors are worth repairing.
