UPVC Door Threshold Repair and Replacement

22 May 2026·4 min read

The threshold — the strip at the bottom of your front or back door — is one of the most overlooked parts of a UPVC door system. But a worn, damaged, or incorrectly fitted threshold is a significant source of draughts, water ingress, and energy loss. Here's what you need to know.

Types of UPVC Door Threshold

There are three main types of UPVC door threshold. A standard flat threshold sits flush with the floor and creates a step-free access point. An inward ramp threshold has a small raised section that the door closes against — better for weatherproofing. A low-profile accessible threshold is designed for step-free access compliant with building regulations, suitable for wheelchair users or properties where a step would be problematic. Each type has different weatherproofing characteristics.

Signs Your Threshold Needs Attention

Common signs include: cold air coming in at the bottom of a closed door, water pooling on the inner side of the threshold after rain, a draught strip on the door bottom that no longer contacts the threshold, visible cracks or warping in the threshold itself, or a trip hazard caused by a lifted or dislodged threshold. Any of these warrant an inspection.

Threshold Seal Replacement vs Full Replacement

Sometimes the threshold itself is sound but the sealing rubber or brush seal that runs along the door bottom needs replacing. This is a cheaper repair than a full threshold replacement and should be tried first. If the threshold is cracked, badly warped, or no longer level, full replacement is necessary. Threshold replacement is more involved than a simple seal swap, as it requires removing the door, unscrewing the old threshold, and fitting and bedding in the new one correctly.

Professional Threshold Replacement

Getting a threshold replacement right requires the correct threshold profile for your door system and precise fitting to ensure a weathertight seal. A poorly fitted threshold can let in more water and draught than the old one. The Glass Guardian provides threshold inspection, seal replacement, and full threshold replacement services across Birmingham and the Black Country. We carry a range of threshold profiles suitable for most UPVC and composite door systems.
