Composite doors have become increasingly popular over the past decade, offering better security, insulation, and aesthetics than traditional UPVC doors. But like any door, they can develop faults. Here's what can — and can't — be repaired.
What Makes a Composite Door Different?
A composite door has a solid core (typically glass reinforced plastic or a timber/foam composite) rather than the hollow core of a traditional UPVC door. This makes them more rigid, better insulating, and more secure. However, they still use UPVC frames and standard multipoint locking hardware, meaning many of the same repairs apply.
What Can Be Repaired
The vast majority of composite door faults are in the hardware, not the door itself. Stiff or dropped doors are usually fixed with hinge adjustment. Non-functioning locks are repaired by replacing the gearbox, cylinder, or multi-point lock strip. Broken handles, letterboxes, and knockers can all be replaced. Draught issues are usually solved by replacing the rubber seals and gaskets around the door slab.
What Usually Can't Be Repaired
If the composite door slab itself is damaged — cracked, delaminating, or severely warped — it typically cannot be repaired economically and the slab will need replacing. However, in many cases a replacement slab can be fitted into the existing frame, which is significantly cheaper than a full door replacement. Faded or chalky colour on the outer skin is also difficult to reverse, though specialist cleaning and restoration products can help.
Getting the Right Repair
Because composite doors use standard UPVC hardware for most of their moving parts, a specialist UPVC repair engineer can fix the majority of faults. The Glass Guardian handles composite door repairs across the West Midlands, including lock replacements, hinge adjustments, handle replacements, and seal work.
